As we reach the peak of this year’s holiday season, many of us are spending a significant amount of time in our dining spaces with family and friends, surrounded by lots of good food. Because of this, some of us have started to reassess our spaces. It’s only natural to feel somewhat overwhelmed at the prospect of styling the perfect dining room, so as our holiday gift to you, we’d like to share some tips and tricks on how to create a space fit for any season!
Stick to the classics
Let’s start with the obvious: when selecting a dining table, we suggest opting for solid wood, as it creates warmth and makes for a good focal point in the room. Wooden tables can withstand regular and heavy usage, as scuffs, stains, and scratches will only enhance the patina. With tables made from MDF, the possibility of chipping the veneer becomes much more likely, but this will not be an issue with a wooden table. There are many different styles of tables made of wood, so it is important to choose one that will match the look of your home. Other possible options include but are not limited to glass, concrete, and marble.
Ahoy, captain.
When selecting your captain’s chairs, these being the ones that sit at the heads of the table, consider contrasting chairs to add a formal flair to your dining room. Wind back the hands of time by incorporating a beautiful set of his and her chairs at either end of your dining table. Many styles are available, both in the new and used furniture market. Remember that upholstered chairs tend to be more comfortable, especially for those of us who enjoy lingering at the dining table. White and light-colored fabrics do not need to be avoided but make sure to select a performance fabric to avoid stains.
Good lighting is everything!
Unless medieval interior design is right up your alley, we suggest taking the time to plan the lighting in your dining room. We would recommend having various sources of lighting allowing you to adjust the brightness according to your needs. When choosing a chandelier, be prepared to invest time to properly research the look you are trying to achieve, again ensuring that it meshes well with the style of your home. Looking for inspiration in design magazines and on social media is highly recommended. Generally, the chandelier should hang no lower than 2.5 to 3 feet above the table, but there may be some variation in rooms with very high ceilings.
The conversation starter
While a minimalist and sleek dining room has become one of the more popular, go-to choices in the last year, we would recommend adding some personality to the space. Whether that comes in the form of a piece of art or some fun wallpaper, you should consider adding a statement piece to your dining room. For amateur art enthusiasts, framing your own work to hang on the walls is a possible option! If you are looking to buy a piece of art but do not have the budget, consider attending an art show at your local university. On the other hand, if it’s wallpaper that you are after, you’re in luck, as there are so many incredible options to choose from. While higher quality wallpaper may not be the most budget-friendly, consider using it on the focal wall in the room to give your guests something to talk about!
Don’t be a centerpiece cynic!
For our final tip, we suggest incorporating a centerpiece on your dining table for that extra wow factor. We recommend a potted plant, fresh branches, or cut flowers, but keep in mind that water can cause staining on your wood table—water your plants with care! Alternatively, you could consider putting together a bowl of fruit, for a more functional centerpiece. Anything goes—lemons, pears, apples, artichokes—it’s totally up to you! A collection of glass jars, wooden bowls, candles, or pewter vases are a few other ideas. Remember to be bold, as your centerpiece should stand out and capture the eye!
The dining room is arguably the M.V.P. in our homes. It’s where we gather with friends and family to celebrate and connect, so don’t underestimate the importance of this space! We hope you were able to take away some tips and tricks on styling the perfect dining room.
