This is a back-to-school like none we have ever seen before. Some of our children have returned to school and some have started virtual classes. Some parents have returned to work over the summer, many others are still working from home. Now is the time to rethink our temporary home offices and living arrangements. We are seeing a lot more time, money, and thought invested into creating and reconfiguring at-home workspaces. In this post, we’ll be discussing how to go about preparing your home for the back-to-school season during COVID.
To start, consider adding extra office space to one of your bedrooms. Whether the office space is for you to continue to work from home, or for your children who are continuing their studies online, a bedroom office space will help keep your living areas clutter-free. For those who would prefer to not have their office in their bedroom, consider adding one to a guest bedroom, as those rooms are seeing much less use. All it takes is a little creativity, and the world can be your oyster!
Personally, the idea of getting my work done from the comfort of my own bed sounds like absolute heaven! A portable laptop bed table will make your dreams of staying in bed all morning a reality. All you have to do is set up your laptop, grab a snack or some coffee and get to work! This is also a totally doable DIY project that you and your family can tackle on a weekend. If you’re preparing for back-to-school during covid, this could be a must-have!
A lot of kids in post-secondary education will continue to learn from home this year and will need more storage for all the textbooks and materials they usually keep at school. You should definitely be on the lookout for furniture pieces that’ll maximize your storage space. Consider coffee tables with extra shelving, a variety of wicker baskets, a row of hooks, etc., they’re all great options.
Back to school means stuff… everywhere. Books, coats, school supplies, it’s always the same story and always a huge, anxiety-provoking mess. In this entryway, the addition of baskets into the hallway console allows a place to put away hats and gloves. In the living room the additional shelves in the side tables as well as baskets and furniture with storage options, are great ways to keep your home more organized.
Given that we’re not doing as much socializing, spending time outside has become such a big part of our lives. If this is the case, you might want to look into creating a mudroom, which will work as an intermediary between the outdoors and your home. You’ll benefit from the extra storage that a mudroom offers, as well as how clean your house will be when people are no longer trekking their dirty boots and shoes into the living spaces.
Just because it’s a mudroom doesn’t mean it has to look drab or dirty. Isn’t this room great!? Very clean-looking and minimalistic, but still super functional. Like in the design above, make sure to select a floor that can withstand a lot of wear and tear. A mudroom can also be a great place for the little ones to dump their schoolbags without them getting in your way!
Try to name something better than a good after-school snack. Trick question, you can’t! It’s so important to keep you and your family well-nourished, especially as we prepare for this year’s tumultuous back-to-school season. An unorganized pantry will just add to your long list of stressors, so we suggest looking into a design that’ll maximize storage space and minimize clutter. If you’re not fully looking to commit to a walk-in pantry, like the one above, or don’t have the space for one, a cabinet pantry might be more your pace (see top right). A well-stocked pantry will ensure success in the kitchen and save time when preparing school lunches!
