Tips on Styling the Perfect Bookshelf

Finding a cozy corner where you can sit down with a hot cup of tea and enjoy a moment with a good book is heaven. Due to the pandemic, we’re spending more time cooped up inside. Oftentimes, this time is spent dealing with the stress that comes with working remotely. At LUX decor, we value the special, quiet spaces that allow us to escape from these everyday stressors. However, creating nooks like these can be daunting, and perfecting the atmosphere of your reading corner is not always easy. While it may not seem obvious at first, we highly recommend re-vamping your bookshelf! In today’s blog, we’ll be sharing design tips on styling the perfect bookshelf, in the hopes that you’ll be able to create the bookshelf of your dreams!

You Are What You Read!

To start, go for some fun personal touches like picture frames, and any other little knick-knacks you think might look good. Adding a personal element to your bookshelf can make an unimaginative space so much more welcoming. You know what they say, “You are what you read”! Go for the obvious, a picture frame or treasured family belongings, maybe even a souvenir from before traveling was taboo. Display anything that speaks to you! Additionally, bookshelves happen to come in handy when looking for a place to exhibit personal collections. Just like all the books it holds, your bookshelf should tell a story too, namely, your story.

Embrace the Versatility!

Who says bookshelves are exclusively for books? They were once thought to be part of a person’s personal life, but now that we’re opening up our lives to so many people via zoom video meetings, conferences, etc. we have to make sure our bookshelves are looking as presentable as possible. Adding attractive touches such as artwork and decorative vases can provide great interest to your shelves. While it depends on the look you’re going for, you can coordinate these items by colour or shape (or not)!

Go for the “Green-thumb” Look

There’s nothing like a plant to liven up a dreary bookshelf! We’re all spending so much time inside, and in turn, many of us have started to bring the outside in. While we’re thrilled to be seeing so many people embrace that plant-mom life, we’re starting to have trouble fitting all our leafy friends in our homes. This is where additional space in your bookcase is convenient. Make sure to choose plants that are well adjusted to the lighting and are in pots that won’t leak and ruin your books. Also, save yourself some effort by placing them in a location in your shelf that is easily accessible for watering.

Maybe you’re having a friend or two over for a covid-safe hangout, and are feeling a little embarrassed by your recent guilty-pleasure reads displayed so obviously on your bookshelf… we’re not judging! Just a little piece of advice: throw some colourful flowers in a vase and we’re sure no one will notice the copy of 50 shades of grey tucked as far from the line of sight as possible…

Bookends Baby!

Finally, our last tip is to incorporate bookends into your bookshelf! Not only do they serve as functional pieces that will support your books and keep your space organized, but they can also be very attractive statement pieces on their own. Bookends come in all shapes and sizes and can easily make your bookshelf ten times more attractive. They can be made from many different materials, can be carved or painted… the possibilities are limitless. Check out your local antique stores for great finds! However, you could also get crafty and DIY your very own, one-of-a-kind bookends that suit your taste and space best.
